Carpenter Technology Subsidiary Joins Forces with Schutt Sports: Titanium to Be Used in Protective Sporting Equipment

WYOMISSING, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2005--Dynamet Incorporated, a subsidiary of Carpenter Technology Corporation (NYSE:CRS), said today it had formed a strategic alliance with Schutt(R) Sports related to titanium faceguards used in football, baseball, softball, and other sports applications.

As part of the alliance, Dynamet will provide its UPG(R) Ti-Guard(TM) (Ultimate Performance Grade) titanium material to Schutt, a privately held manufacturer and marketer of athletic equipment.

Dynamet's partnership with Schutt is part of a continuing strategy to diversify into recreation and consumer markets. "We are very excited about the opportunity to partner with such a progressive company as Schutt," said Brian M. Brandstetter, Manager, Marketing, Dynamet. "Schutt's history of supplying innovative high quality sports equipment is unparalleled and together we expect to grow our businesses in this unique niche market."

"Dynamet understands and shares our commitment to supply technically innovative products to the protective sports equipment marketplace," states Julie Nimmons, President of Schutt. "We have had tremendous market acceptance from the players who have used our titanium guards, and with the formation of our alliance with Dynamet, we are ready to expand our offering to include more designs and broaden our reach into more markets."

Faceguards that have been made from titanium provide the required strength needed and are lighter in weight, creating a performance advantage. Compared to a similar design from steel, a titanium faceguard typically is one-half the weight. In addition to these advantages, titanium is resistant to almost all forms of corrosion and is more flexible than steel materials often used in faceguards.

Dynamet's UPG Ti-Guard material is produced to meet Schutt's unique requirements, enabling Schutt to manufacture a wide range of faceguard designs. Schutt has made titanium faceguards for football, baseball and softball helmets which have been used from the pros through the youth markets.

Schutt Sports, headquartered in Litchfield, Illinois, is the world's largest manufacturer of college, high school, and junior football helmets and faceguards. Schutt has introduced many of the game's most important advances in protective equipment, from its first football faceguard in 1935 to breakthrough helmet technology in 2003 with the DNA Helmet(TM). Schutt Sports also markets innovative, quality, protective and field/equipment for baseball, basketball, and softball, and is the Official Base Supplier of Major League Baseball(R). Schutt Sports is one of the last family owned and operated sporting goods companies in the country.
