Michael Murtagh

Vice President and Group President, Specialty Alloys Operations (SAO)

Michael Murtagh, PhD was appointed Vice President and Chief Technoloy Officer (CTO) of Carpenter Technology Corporation in October 2016 with responsibility for the Research & Development (R&D) and Quality organizations.

Mike more than 15 years of product development and process technology expertise, along with experience in manufacturing operations, engineering, quality, and product management.

Prior to joining Carpenter, Mike’s was CTO for Unifrax, a $600 million private-equity owned advanced materials company that serves multiple industrial markets requiring high-performance, high-temperature applications and solutions. Mike was responsible for corporate R&D and innovation, process and capital engineering, new business development, and intellectual property across 26 global locations. Before Unifrax, Mike was with James Hardie, a $1.5 billion global building materials company, as Vice President – Research, Development & Central Operations, including responsibility for EH&S, process/capital engineering, quality, Lean/continuous improvement, supply chain, customer service, and intellectual property across 12 global locations. His career began with Corning in 1999, where he spent more than ten years as a research scientist and plant operations manager for one of the world’s leaders in glass, ceramics, and advanced materials.

Mike earned his PhD, Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from Rutgers University, NJ. He also holds an MBA in Finance from Syracuse University, NY. In addition, Mike also attended the Executive Leadership program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
