Tony R. Thene

President & Chief Executive Officer
Tony R. Thene was appointed President & CEO of Carpenter Technology Corporation in July 2015, and is also a member of the company’s Board of Directors. Before being named top executive of Carpenter’s $2.2 billion global manufacturing operation which serves the aerospace, energy, transportation, medical, and industrial markets, Thene joined the company in January 2013 as Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer.

Thene has focused his efforts on providing customers with material solutions for complex problems. His “voice of the customer” approach to business was the driving force behind the development of Carpenter’s new strategy which focuses on Technology Development, Operational Excellence, Strategic Marketing, and Talent Engagement. Thene also restructured the company’s commercial organization to better align company expertise and professional services with current and future customer needs. In addition, he introduced the “Carpenter Operating Model” based on lean manufacturing principles and also developed the organization’s values and vision, rounding out a clear direction and identity for the company. Currently, Thene is positioning Carpenter to be a leader in additive manufacturing and soft magnetics with strategic investments and acquisitions.

Prior to joining Carpenter, Thene served as Vice President of Alcoa, Inc. and the Chief Financial Officer of the Engineered Products and Solutions Group, and was a member of Alcoa’s Executive Council. Previously, he served as Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer for Alcoa where he was responsible for the company’s worldwide accounting systems and records, corporate fiduciary financial processes, and the preparation and filing of Alcoa’s financial statements and reports as well as the Global Financial Services and Information Systems areas. Tony also held the positions of Director, Investor Relations; Chief Financial Officer for the Flat Rolled Products Group; Chief Financial Officer for Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals; and manufacturing manager for the Alumina Chemicals business among other roles during his 23 years with Alcoa.

Tony earned an undergraduate degree in Accounting from Indiana State University and his MBA from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He is also a Certified Public Accountant. Tony serves on the Board of Directors for Neenah, Inc, a leading global specialty materials company focused on premium niche markets that value performance and image. He also serves on Furman University’s Board of Trustees.
